The ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Program (http://www.esa-cci.org/) has asked for input from the CliC Community about which Antarctic satellite data products would be most valuable. They invite you, as a possible future user of these data products, to provide recommendations and feedback about what products you think it would be most useful for an Antarctic CCI project to focus on. To assess the user requirements for satellite based Antarctic ice sheet data products please complete the short on-line survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AntarcticaCCI, containing just 16 multiple choice questions which take only 10 minutes to complete. The survey will remain open until 16.09.2013.
If you are looking for a few new interesting soundbytes of cool research happening in the cryosphere, we have just the thing for you. CliC has teamed up with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) to help enhance their FrostBytes project. FrostBytes are short (often 30-60 second) videos of researchers talking about their current projects and neat discoveries. Erik Warming, an APECS member and ice sheet graduate student, has been helping early career scientists who have attended recent CliC sponsored workshops to create a few new FrostBytes. Does your research relate to improving understanding of how jets and non-zonal circulation couple to the rest of the system in the Southern Hemisphere? Recent studies suggest that the zonal and non-zonal circulation of the atmospheric circulation influence the climate system in the high latitude Southern Hemisphere. For example, this influence may be reflected in the variability in Antarctic sea ice extent as well as the climate over the Antarctic continent. In this session, we invite contributions that examine the coupling between the larger scale atmospheric circulation and the climate system of the Southern Hemisphere. Contributions may include but are not limited to, theoretical, observational and modelling studies on the vertically coupled processes in climate. Submissions that examine how the southern jets and the non-zonal circulation couple to the system are encouraged.

The International Permafrost Association Education and Outreach Committee, which CliC's Director Jenny Baeseman serves on, is happy to announce that a Thematic Network on Permafrost has been established as part of the University of the Arctic (UArctic).
The Thematic Network on Permafrost can help support education and outreach activities dealing with permafrost for many institutes and organizations. At minimum, the network can offer collaboration and support for activities on the following three topics:
- Research cooperation
- Knowledge sharing in education
- Curriculum development and class/summer school cooperation
CliC SSG Chair Greg Flato attended the most recent discussions of Future Earth for the Global Environmental Change (GEC) projects (Diversitas, IGBP, IHDP, WCRP and ESSP), held online 3 July 2013. The objectives of this Future Earth webinar were to provide an opportunity for introduction and initial discussion between the Future Earth leadership (Science Committee chair and vice-chairs, and director of the interim secretariat) and the GEC projects; discuss projects’ scientific interests, expectations and vision for the further development of Future Earth and identify potential areas for collaboration across projects, and ideas for new scientific activities; and inform the definition of a process for the transition of projects into Future Earth from both a scientific and practical perspectives (to be developed over the coming months).

At the April meeting Sustained Arctic Observing Network (SAON) Board meeting, Erica Key from the US National Science Foundation gave an update on the Belmont Forum that might be of interest to CliC Researchers. Greg Flato, CliC Scientific Steering Group Chair attended the meeting and can be contacted for further information.
The Belmont Forum (http://igfagcr.org/index.php/belmont-forum) is a subset of the IGFA nations, including representatives from 13 nations, the European Union, and 2 international scientific councils (ICSU, and ISSC). The Forum identifies shared global priorities and leads multi-national calls for proposals called Collaborative Research Actions (CRA). Past examples of Belmont CRAs include calls for research on coastal vulnerability and freshwater security. The Forum requires each Collaborative Research Action to address the Belmont Challenge: To deliver knowledge needed for action to avoid and adapt to detrimental environmental change including extreme hazardous events. Belmont further requires consideration of human and natural systems in each proposal, and a minimum of three nations involved in each project.
The themes for an Arctic CRA — Arctic observing and Arctic sustainability science — were developed during a first scoping workshop in Canada during the IPY meeting in 2012. These themes were approved by the Belmont Forum Principals at their spring 2013 meeting.
