Call for Participation: Glacier Model Intercomparison (GlacierMIP)

1-BMarzeion-suldenfernerGlacierMIP is a new 4-yr Targeted Activity under the umbrella of the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) project aiming at systematic intercomparison of glacier models that are capable of modeling the evolution of glaciers outside the ice sheets on a global-scale. Similar to previous ice sheet modeling initiatives, GlacierMIP provides a framework for a coordinated model intercomparison to foster model improvements and reduce uncertainties in global-scale glacier projections.

Our primary objectives are to:

  1. coordinate a model intercomparison of existing state-of-the-art large-scale glacier models with respect to decadal to century scale glacier mass change projections (and possibly century scale past reconstructions),
  2. identify current model deficiencies and data needs, and work towards a new generation of global-scale glacier models that allow more accurate projections of the glacier contribution to sea-level rise.

Workshop Reminder: Ice-ocean load changes and Earth deformation

We are pleased to announce a 3-day symposium on modelling and observation of solid-earth response to ice-ocean load changes. The symposium will be followed by a 1-day hands-on workshop on modelling of elastic deformation. Please save the dates:

Newsletter Available: Changing Cold Regions Network (CCRN)

-CCRN is a CliC endorsed project.

1The Changing Cold Regions Network (CCRN) released its first newsletter in December 2014.

CCRN is a new collaborative research network bringing together the unique expertise of a team of over 50 university and government scientists, including 36 Canadian scientists representing 4 government agencies and 8 universities, as well as 15 international scientists.  The network is funded for 5 years through the Climate Change and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) Initiative of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

CCRN’s objectives are to integrate existing and new sources of data with improved predictive and observational tools to understand, diagnose and predict interactions amongst the cryospheric, ecological, hydrological, and climatic components of the changing Earth system at multiple scales, with a geographic focus on Western Canada’s rapidly changing cold interior.

In December, CCRN submitted their 2nd Annual Science and Progress report to NSERC. The first year of CCRN was very much taken up with recruitment, turning a project proposal into a detailed work plan etc. Their 2nd Annual General meeting, at Wilfrid Laurier University in October 2014, showed that an impressive amount of work is now underway.
