CliC thanks everyone who submitted a nomination in response to our last Scientific Steering Group open call, which ran from July through the end of September 2024.
|
We plan to submit our chosen nominees to the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee for consideration during their next meeting in Spring 2025. Those chosen and approved will begin membership in 2026.

State of the Climate in 2023 was published in August 2024 as a Special Supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) Vol. 105 No. 8. CMIP7 data request v1.0beta released for sea ice variables

A “core” set of baseline variables was agreed upon a few months ago to allow basic monitoring of the CMIP7 simulations.
|
|
In October, a first version of the “harmonised” variables for CMIP7 was released in preparation for the AR7 Fast Track Data Request (due in March 2025). Feedback on this v1.0beta is possible until 17 November 2024.
|
|

Impacts of Changes in the Mountain Cryosphere: IC-MontC

At their 20th meeting in August 2024, the CliC Scientific Steering Group approved a new working group: Impacts of Changes in the Mountain Cryosphere (IC-MontC) for an initial 5-year period.
|
|
This approval was made following recommendations from a 2023 workshop in Vienna that brought together a number of leaders working on the mountain cryosphere.
|
|
|
|
CliC is currently establishing a steering committee for IC-MontC, and further details will be announced in the next newsletter.
|
|
As a first step towards addressing the scientific concerns of loss of the mountain cryosphere, a workshop will be held in Innsbruck, Austria in connection with the International Mountain Conference (IMC) 2025. This workshop will focus on high resolution climate modelling in areas of complex mountain topography, where snow and ice commonly cover the land surface. Additional information will be forthcoming.

Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, 2025–2034

On 13 August 2024, The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, 2025–2034.
|
- "Decides to proclaim the period from 2025 to 2034 as the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences [...] to address the challenges associated with melting glaciers and changes to the cryosphere by advancing related scientific research and monitoring..."
- "Invites all States Members of the United Nations, all relevant organizations
of the United Nations system, other global, regional and subregional organizations
and Indigenous Peoples, as well as other relevant stakeholders [...] to observe the Decade of Action [...] by promoting activities aimed at raising awareness of the Decade and the importance of glaciers, snow and ice in the climate system..."
- "Invites the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to lead the implementation of the Decade of Action..."

2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation
|

In December 2022, the UN General Assembly, led by Tajikistan, adopted a resolution designating 2025 as the “International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation”.
|
|
|
|
The IGYP will begin with an event in January, in Geneva, led by WMO and UNESCO. Then, on March 21st (and each year thereafter), the World Day for Glaciers will be commemorated at the UN in New York. In addition, World Water Day 2025 (March 22nd) will focus on the theme of Glacier preservation, highlighting the challenges of glacier loss, water security and climate change. These events will serve as an opportunity for discussion and action regarding the condition of the planet's glaciers and their impact on mountain hydrology, regional water security, and the vulnerability of communities and ecosystems.
|
May 26-29, 2025, the government of Tajikistan will host a scientific meeting on the state of glaciers today, the conditions required for glacier preservation, and the potential impacts of the loss of the mountain cryosphere in different regions of the world. Further details of these events will be provided as they become available.
|

- LINKAGES is co-convening Session 1.7: Understanding Arctic Amplification mechanisms, global impacts, and associated feedbacks of the climate system at different temporal and spatial scales
- The CliC Arctic Sea Ice Working Group (ASIWG) will run a workshop on Sunday 23 March 2025 from 09:00 – 16:30 MST at ASSW. The workshop will convene leading scientists and early career researchers to discuss the critical issue of Arctic sea ice loss and its global impacts. Topics include advancements in monitoring sea ice variables, such as the ESA’s upcoming CRISTAL satellite mission focused on sea ice thickness, and updates from synthesis reports like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Arctic Report Card and the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) of the Arctic Council. Participants will address observational needs, enhance model-observation integration, and develop protocols for consistent data collection. Collaborative discussions will also focus on modeling projects to project future ice loss impacts, assess global cryosphere needs, and advance open-access data availability in Arctic research.
