An innovative scientific study involving an international group of 29 ice sheet experts, and led by the University of Lincoln, U.K., has identified that global climate change-related rises in sea level could be better predicted by gaining a clearer understanding of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.

2023 Annual Report Highlights
|
|
A complete 2023 annual report is forthcoming and will be published on our website.
|
|
|
CliC co-sponsored groups are active in myriad forms of research and outreach. Here we list an inexhaustive sampling of working group highlights from 2023. Many groups were able to meet, many for the first time in person since before 2020, at conferences and in organized workshops. Sea ice related working groups all met at the International Glaciological Society Sea-Ice Symposium in side-meetings and issued a joint press release regarding sea ice loss: "Polar scientists call for urgent action in view of rapid Arctic and Antarctic change". Ice sheet and ocean modeling groups were able to meet at IUGG and the SCAR-INSTANT conferences. Other groups also organized sessions at AGU and EGU.
|

Model intercomparison groups like SIMIP, GlacierMIP, and ISMIP are also working toward the IPCC AR 7. ASIWG members had a leading role in writing the Arctic sea ice sections of the Bulletin of the American Society’s State of the Climate Report (2023 in press) and the NOAA Arctic Report Card. The World Meteorological Organisation Antarctic Treaty Paper published "Policy-relevant science highlights from the Antarctic CORDEX project" at the 45th Antarctic treaty Consultative Meeting ion Helsinki, Finland. BEPSII continues its important outreach priorities with their Early Career Scientist Exchange Program, in which ECRs (Early Career Researchers) are fully or partially funded to spend time in another institute to work on BEPSII collaborative projects.

Peer review of Arctic Monitoring & Assessment Programme (AMAP) Arctic Climate Update 2024: Key Trends and Impacts report

There was a very strong response to the call for nominations for peer reviewers for the AMAP climate change update report for 2024.
|
|
|
|
More than 100 experts were nominated by Arctic countries and Permanent Participants, as well as eight observer countries, CliC, and IASC, to review individual chapters of the report. The selection of reviewers for each chapter will be made by a small group led by Keith Alverson, CliC Executive Director, together with Narelle van der Wel, WCRP Secretariat Liaison to CliC. CliC will also lead an overall review of the full report. AMAP is grateful to such excellent cooperation with the CliC International Project Office. The peer review is scheduled to take place during the month of April.

Under the leadership of CliC, AMAP together with IASC (International Arctic Science Committee), prepared the Arctic Freshwater Synthesis, which was published as journal articles in 2015, and summarized in an AMAP overview report in 2016 as well as in a chapter of the SWIPA 2017 update assessment report. AMAP looks forward to renewed cooperation with CliC on future climate and cryosphere related assessments and syntheses.

New Working Group:
Impacts of Changes in the Mountain Cryosphere
(IC-MontC)

It was agreed to establish a short term planning group to develop a potential new CliC mountain activity Impacts of Changes in the Mountain Cryosphere (IC-MontC). The planning group should comprise experts doing research in the major mountain regions of the world and include expertise on the societal impacts of changes in the mountain cryosphere. Ray Bradley was asked to take the lead in organizing this planning group, and report back to the 2024 CliC SSG meeting with a proposed way forward.
|
Like most of the world, mountain regions have been warming steadily over the last century, but accelerated warming at higher elevations has been documented by several investigators as and described as “elevation-dependent climate change”. This has far-reaching consequences for the mountain cryosphere, which is especially sensitive to rising temperatures. A reduction in the mountain cryosphere has many negative consequences both for those living in the mountains, and for those in lower areas nearby. Glacier recession often leads to the formation of unstable lakes and dangerous flooding may result from landslides when thawing permafrost releases debris from adjacent steep slopes. Impacts are also felt at lower elevations which are dependent on water supplied from the mountains above. The loss of snow cover affects alpine agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as the terrestrial and aquatic ecology of mountain regions, and in some areas raises the potential for wildfires.
|
Because mountain regions are extremely diverse, and the mountain cryosphere is often located in the temperate and tropical regions where most humans live, studies of cryosphere loss at high altitudes and its societal consequences are complex and would benefit from the diverse experience and perspectives that scientists who study different mountain regions of the world can provide.
|
An Initial Planning Meeting is being organized and will be held in Vienna the weekend before the European Geophysical Union Meeting, April 13-14, 2024. The meeting will:

Consider opportunities for scientific visits, to learn of regional issues

Human Dimensions

Alongside the proposal for a mountain group CliC's Scientific Steering Group also heard a proposal for a group centered on the societal effects of the changing cryosphere.
|
|
This group necessitates weaving together physical and social sciences to study the impacts of climate and cryosphere change on humans. The goal is to better understand how communities rely on cryosphere services, the tradeoffs communities will make as these services diminish, and the hazards faced in relation to changing conditions.
|
|
|
|

CliC at the SCAR Open Science Conference 2024
|

The CliC Scientific Steering Group will hold its 20th meeting from 24-25 August, 2024 alongside the SCAR Open Science Conference in Pucón, Chile. We hope that this will allow many CliC affiliated scientists, Tasks and Activity leads attending the SCAR OSC to also attend the SSG meeting. In addition to holding our annual steering committee meeting, CliC is co-organizing one of the scientific sessions at the SCAR OSC - Session 3: Polar climate change, variability and teleconnections in the past, present, and future.
|
Finally, in partnership with SCAR and other partners, CliC has participated in proposing a workshop to be held at the SCAR OSC: Antarctic Annual Climate Report: Concept and Feasibility. The topics for discussion at this workshop, if it is accepted, are:

It is increasingly clear that there is a need for an annual report on the Antarctic climate system, describing both the state of the system and important science advances. This need comes from a range of Antarctic stakeholders including scientists, policymakers and logistics operators. In previous years annual reports were compiled as part of the legacy of the 2009 Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) report. These reports included short summaries of key science updates suitable for communicating to a wide audience of both scientists and non-scientists. However, in recent years they have ceased to be produced.
|
|
The need for an annual report has been discussed across a number of groups, both within and outside SCAR, including: WCRP Climate and the Cryosphere (CliC), CCAMLR, and the SCAR AntClimNow SRP. In recognizing this need, it is important to discuss potential options for the concept of an annual report on the Antarctic climate system. This workshop will be a follow-on from a planned online meeting on this topic in early-mid NH summer. The main aim will therefore be to discuss the outcomes of this earlier online meeting and address any outstanding points that need agreeing. Representatives from interested groups (such as the above-listed) and individuals are welcome to contribute to this workshop.

2025 Funding Requests
|
The WCRP is implementing a new procedure to distribute available resources across all of WCRP's international coordination activities.
|
This procedure builds on four budget categories:
|

Baseline funding: ongoing annual needs for essential meetings of CliC and its tasks and activities
|
-
|
Strategic funds to support special (one-off) activities (e.g. workshops, conferences, assessment papers, new research efforts, etc.)
|
-
|
Funds to support capacity building efforts (e.g. summer schools, field work schools, Global South Fellowships)
|
-
|
Funds required to support overarching operational activities (e.g. communication)
|
|
|
|
CliC Activities: Some support will be available from baseline funding, as is customary. If you have additional strategic, capacity building, or communication related funding needs for 2025, please use the following template to outline your request:
