Description

Abstract: Fluctuations in ice sheet mass are of considerable societal importance because they reflect and effect changes in Earth’s climate. Advances in satellite observations and numerical models have improved our ability to detect and predict changes in ice sheet mass over a variety of timescales. This session brings together observations and predictions of past and future ice sheet mass balance, building on the work carried out within IMBIE and within ISMIP6. IMBIE is a joint-initiative of ESA and NASA producing a single estimate of the past global sea level contribution due to the polar ice sheets. ISMIP6 is an international consortium supported by WCRP CliC exploring the future global sea level contribution due to the polar ice sheets. We welcome all studies related to ice sheet mass balance, including methodological improvements in satellite and modelling techniques, independent evaluations of observations and predictions, and estimates of past and future ice sheet evolution.
